@harrypotterfan – there are lots of ways to make your own map, it really just depends on what you’re trying to get out of it. On the low-cost side, you could always just hand-draw something. If you’re not artistically inclined and want a program to aid you, Campaign Cartographer is a good choice.

Bought both CC3 and DD3, but gave up on the application .. its too complicated and it takes me like forever to build the simplest of maps..and besides they look like…well…you know..
Would it be possible to get my hands on the actual CC3 files for your maps, to learn to, modify and use in my games ? – I am not interested in using them anything else. Would be appreciated from my side.
I’d need to check how the license works for the software – a lot of my maps have paid-for elements included in them (e.g. from the Annuals and style packs), so I’m not sure if ProFantasy allows me to share those or not. But some of my older maps that are just straight CC3 might be OK.
I can sympathize with the feeling that the software is complicated at first glance. For me, the best strategy was just to go through the CC3 manual page-by-page and physically do everything they teach you there. It will take a few hours of work, but once you do that you’ll have a really good grasp of how to make maps quickly.
Thanks for the reply. I am not a graphics designer, and I wont ever be one, even if I try. I can see from other people who build maps that they look fantastic – and I mean it, they really do, including yours. But I won’t ever be on that level of skill, nor do I take interest on becoming a graphics designer. I had hoped for something easy to work with in CC3. The mere thought of working my way through a 250 page manual is simply “no go” for me. I miss things like “bring me a castle with three tower in white – GO” button, spread 50 corpses on the map, put a small lake there.. fiddling with details is fine with me, but honestly, thats all I do when using the application, there are no “put in a lake here” its mouse-click-mouse-click..and then something goes wrong on the way and I have to start all over.
CC3 is like a CAD application to me

Based on the all-caps of your comment, I’m going to assume that my site left you frustrated. If that’s the case, sorry about that – I could definitely improve some things on the site and add more content to the tutorials section.
To answer your question, there are many ways to build a map. I primarily use Campaign Cartographer 3, which is a CAD-based program specifically designed for map-making. Sometimes I also use PhotoShop, which is much more powerful though not specifically made for maps. Gimp is a really good free alternative to PhotoShop. There are also a lot of other programs out there – you just have to find the one that works best for you. What kind of maps would you like to make?

You can download the maps here to use, but this isn’t a software site. Most maps here are made with CC3, but it’s not free.
Some free choices would be:
1) AutoRealm (similar to CC3)
2) Gimp (similar to PhotoShop)
3) Draw by hand

I love your maps. I play D&D and when I was trying to come up with a map, I came across your site. About the only problem I had was the scale, but I easily fixed that. Keep doing what your doing man.

How do I download and edit your free maps? I’m writing a book and I need to create a map for it. Help?
If you click on a map, it should open up a larger version. Right-click on the large version and use “save image as” to save the map to your computer. Then you can open the file in your image-editor-of-choice (PhotoShop, Gimp, Pixlr, etc.) to modify it however you want.
